Q: Car sales tax in city of Chicago versus suburbs?
Can anyone tell me if there is a difference in sales tax when you buy a new car in the suburbs compared to the city? I live in the city, but wondered if it was worthwhile going further away to buy the car. Thanks!
A: by all means go to rockford or belvidere or wisconsin . I made the mistake of going to chicago to buy a car cuz the sticker price was cheaper but they nailed me on the taxes. which ended up costing more than the car in rockford and I lost all the time in travel, tolls, gas.
Q: Can all of the sales tax on a car purchase in Chicago be claimed?
A: If this is a personal vehicle, then you can claim the sales tax as a deduction on Schedule A.
If this vehicle was purchased by a business, then sales tax is added to the cost of the vehicle and depreciated.
Q: Relcating to Chicago should I take my car?
I am transferring to Columbia College in the spring. I will have to work in addition to going to school. I plan to find a job within the city. I am also staying on campus. I was told to sale my car or leave it home. Ive been to chicago a couple of times but I am not 100 percent sure if I should take my car.
A: I would weigh the options since Columbia College usually have parking passes for their students, but that can be costly for some people. I would use the school’s lot if you want to have your car, but because you’ll be downtown near a lot of stores like Linens and Things, Target, Starbucks, Whole Foods Market, Panera Bread, DSW shoe store, Office Depot, Petsmart, and soon to be Best Buy and other stores so it’s all accessable by a quick bus ride or walking. I would find out about the parking before you come to Chicago to give yourself enough time to decide whether to keep or sell the car.
Q: Moving from Chicago to Seattle. Do I need to pay tax on my car on registration?
I am soon moving from Chicago to Seattle. I bought a car one month back and got it registered in Chicago(paid all taxes). Do I need to pay sales tax again, once I register it in Washington?
My friend told me that as per Washington law, I must have bought the car at least 3 month before moving into Washington, to avoid paying sales tax. Not sure?
A: I would definitely be talking to the deptartment of motor vehicles to double check the laws on this one. And make sure you have ALL of the paperwork from the purchase of your vehicle.
I think you will need to prove that you paid sales tax in Chicago or it will have to be paid here. Because Washington state has a somewhat high sales tax and two neighboring states have none (Oregon and Alaska), it is tempting for many people to want to buy their vehicles out of state, pay no sales tax and then bring them here and register then.
So call the DMV and explain your situation. They should be able to tell you exactly what you’ll need to do to register your vehicle here when you arrive, and what it will cost. I had a somewhat unusual situation when I registered my vehicle here 15 years ago, and they were very helpful!
Q: Would you buy a brand new car, buy certified or lease if you were in sales?
I am thinking about taking a sales job where I will need to go on 15 appointments throughout Chicago each week. I need a car. My Office is 20 miles from home. My clients will be up to 60 miles away.
A: You should get a high mileage lease, you’ll pay a little more but you’ll always have a newer reliable car to get you were you need to be. If you buy a car, with the mileage you do, it’ll be worth nothing after three years, and you’ll still owe money.
Q: Should I buy a car here in CA or wait till I move to Chicago in a year.?
I live in the Central Valley and I’m moving to Chicago, IL in a year, and I was wondering if I should buy a car here in CA since we have a bit cheaper sales tax than Chicago, Or should I just wait till I move to Chicago and not have to pay to get my car shipped from here to there.
I dont have a car myself right now, I share w/my sister. But i’m thinking of getting a job.
A: You might not need a car depending on the area you are moving to-car stickers and mandatory annual fees for parking on the street in certain areas-even on Sunday are pricey-. If you absolutely want a car, purchase it in Cali, Chicago tax is ridiculously expensive. Consider how much you will be driving it as well. Good luck, Chicago is a great place!
Q: does anyone know the difference between sales tax and county tax?
or is the county tax already applied into the sales tax? I live in Chicago and recently bought a new car and i noticed there was a county tax added and i would like to know the difference between the two..
A: One is based on the purchase price and only levied upon a sale. The other is based on the value of the property (in this case a vehicle) and is an annual tax.
Q: How well is the towing business in the Midwest?
Im thingking of buying a new or used tow truck but not sure how the business is, I see a lot of tow trucks around my town (chicago) and always think theres money there, Also Im in the car business (car sales) & every month I spend well over $300 in tows..
A: Excellent, especially in the winter. But as you have noticed the competition is pretty stiff.
If you are spending $300 a month on tows, maybe you should look into purchasing a good used tow truck. Check the math before you do so. You know, such things as insurance, maintenance, etc. before coming to decision. In the long run it may be cheaper to pay the $300.
Q: How do you get a car title once one is lost?
Someone I know purchased a car and was promised the title would come in the mail the following week. 4 months later and no title and the previous owner says she sent it (no proof) and there’s nothing else she can do. We live in Indiana and it was purchased in Chicago. As far as I know, there were no contracts signed during the sale. Any ideas? Is she just out all that money and stuck with a un-drivable car? Thanks
A: go to the DMV and file for a lost title
Q: Will terminal to terminal car transport really take a month or more?
I need to transport my vehicle from Los Angeles to Chicago. I need the transit time to be approximately 2 weeks or less. The cheapest way by far is Terminal to Terminal transport, but I’ve heard from the companies that do Door-to-Door transport, that it takes 2 months to get your vehicle and that they won’t cover any damage to your vehicle, etc. Does anyone know anything about Terminal to Terminal transport from PERSONAL experience, rather than a sales person trying to tell me to use their service instead of terminal-to-terminal?
A: LA to Chigago? I wish I had the time to drive it for you along the old Route 66.
.
Q: I have a 1973 Lincoln Continental mark lV that I’m trying to sale. I live in chicago. need buyer soon. Ideas?
I am going to africa and I need to sale the car to raise the money.
A: Ebay that bad boy, you can list it, sell it and have it picked up in less than a week.I just bought a 1987 vet in excellent condition for 6,000.00 and drove 300 miles to pick it up.Won the bid on monday today is thursday and the car is in my driveway.

A: for 1500 it’s going to have LOTS of miles on it
Q: Should I change over my license?
I currently have an Illinois drivers license. I go to school in North Dakota. I have an apartment and I can legally change my license information. I want to buy a used car. If I do this can I get around paying the higher sales tax to Chicago?
A: You can buy and register a car in North Dakota with no problems. You won’t have to change your driver’s license, but there may be some other advantages to doing it… like getting resident tuition rates for your college, instead of paying out-of-state tuition. Might be something to look into.
Q: How do I get a replacement car title and how long does it take to replace?
I recently bought a car in Ft. Lauderdale, FL and had it shipped to my apt in Urbana,IL, but my permanent address in Chicago. The seller shipped me the title, however it was just lost in the mail last week(thanks alot to the dumb carrier who slid it under the wrong apt door). I have no plates or anything, so i need the title ASAP to register it in my name, get plates and have it switched from FL to IL. The only thing i have is the Bill of Sale. How long will it take to get a replacement title? and can i get like an emergency replacement so that i can at LEAST drive the car instead of having it collecting dust since i have no documents for it? I would like to have everything ready b4 school starts Aug 25. Will this be enough time to get everything situated? Especially since i have to deal with 2 different states. Finally how much will it cost? I keep hearing different prices. I just pray that it doesnt take months. Can anybody help me or direct me to some links that can? thanks!
A: just go to your local dmv they will tell you what to do
Q: Advice on moving to Portland, Oregon?
I’ve lived in California, Florida, Minnesota and am currently residing in Illinois right near Chicago! I do NOT like it here! The people are WAY too materialistic, no one I’ve met here cares about the environment or anything else for that matter besides fashion and money. I’ve always been sort of a drifter but have ALWAYS been drawn to Portland. I handle blueprints for a contracting company now but I’m not an architect. I do have many years of sales experience and working with non-profit organizations. Can anyone tell me if there’s sales jobs and affordable housing in or around the Portland area? Also wondering what to do with my car. If I move should I take my vehicle with me or would public transportations suffice? Oh, and does it REALLY rain as much as everyone says? Any feedback you can give me will be very much appreciated! Peace & Love!
~Nicole
A: In “normal” months it rains, and rains, and rains some more. Most people who reside in Portland just live with it.
The public transportation in Portland is excellent, but I would take your car and possibly sell it there, that way you have the option.
Look on the different employment web sites for jobs, you should get a pretty good idea. “Affordable” housing is relative, it’s most likely less than the Chicago area.
Portland has a lot to offer,
Good luck
